3 Questions to Go From Transaction to Transformation

We all know the lessons on the great joys of generosity, but often the monotony can overtake as we drift to the routine of transaction and dollar amounts. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this, we have to find balance in order to keep the vision in front of us. Transformational generosity does not get rid of transaction; rather it shifts our hearts back to where God has called us. It is about values first, and the transaction is just part of the act.

So how do you reinvigorate your generosity with the transformational approach? Use these 3 questions to investigate your habits and attitudes.

Are you a good receiver?

Messages around stewardship and sacrifice tend to dominate the conversation around generosity, but sometimes we need to go a step back. God is less interested in what you have to offer. He just wants your heart. That looks like receiving His grace and freedom first. Real transformational generosity flows from a heart that grasps the significance of receiving God’s good gift of salvation and grace. Generosity becomes a lifestyle, not just a good action, when we receive from Him.

Do you see the underlying causes?

With generosity continuing to grow, there can be pressure to determine which organizations to give to and how you will support them. However, we need to balance our focus on organizations with a look at the bigger picture of how causes are being impacted. Research where you will give with an eye to see how your generosity can make a difference, move the needle, and be part of a larger Kingdom work. You do not have to be a major donor to make a difference; your act of generosity is participating in a community supporting cause, not just organization.

What do you want future generations to carry on?

Legacy tends to be a conversation not moved into action, but generosity can be one of the easiest places to make this transition into real-life application. Consider how you give by how you might want to see the world look different even generations down the road. You must set the path now. When you view your generosity in this lens, it takes on a whole new level of significance.

The beauty of transformational generosity is the continued growth and discovery process. Whether it is entirely new paths you go down or simply greater depth to your experience, generosity becomes a dynamic part of your life. Make it a habit to revisit your generosity plans and evaluate where you need new perspective or new life. Generosity should never be boring or stale; it will transform your life and your heart.
