Have you ever attended an elementary school band concert? If you have, you understand the value of rhythm. When a young musician is learning, they often have a hard time staying on beat; but the consistent pattern is crucial to bring the instruments together and the musical notes to life. Rhythm provides structure.
Rhythm is not just for music. Life is full of rhythms.
A family rhythm offers both consistency and connection. It is deliberate, stabilizing family life through predictability and security. That security helps develop a sense of significance and purpose in the world.
Here are a few ideas to get you started on building, daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal rhythms for your family.
Family Rhythm Ideas
Daily Rhythms
Family dinner – Dinner conversations are a great routine to rely on. Convening around the table to share the highs and lows of the day keeps family members connected. I have a friend who has expanded the high low conversation to include: awesome, bummer, wonder, thankful, and cheers.
Screen-free spaces – Establish a screen-free zone or time. Keep in mind this applies to parents too! Whatever you choose to replace screen time with can fit your family’s favorite ways to rest or play. You could play games together, read independently or together, work on a creative project, or something else!
Evening wind-down – This can be a story time, devotion, or a family prayer. Look for something that creates a peaceful moment in your home at the end of the day.
Weekly Rhythms
Family meeting – This can be a planning session where you discuss what each family member has going on in the upcoming week. It can be a family devotion and prayer time, or a family meal or video call to connect with grown kids.
Set a night – A set activity on the same day each week can be helpful to give kids of all ages something to look forward to. For example: movie and pizza night, kickball night, or family board game competition. Even a set meal like “Taco Tuesdays” can provide a fun structure.
Monthly Rhythms
Try something new – Pick a different family activity to try each month. This could be a hike, a new restaurant, or a new attraction. Perhaps family members take turns planning!
Dates – Date your spouse! This really is a habit that strengthens the whole family. A monthly date night (or day!) helps keep communication and romance intentional. It also demonstrates to kids the importance of investing energy in your marriage.
Seasonal Rhythms
Service project – Find a ministry or nonprofit where you can serve together. Commit to serve quarterly or even more frequently.
Vacation – This is common for many families. Whether it’s camping, road tripping, or international sight-seeing, create time away from the regular flow of life.
Lean into the changing seasons – What activity can you do each season? When our kids were young, in the fall we would go to my in-laws and the kids “helped” rake leaves. Then, we made homemade applesauce. Consider what may work for your family.
The opportunities for family rhythms are endless. Consider what unique strategies may fit your family. Remember, this isn’t a list of things to complete, but an opportunity to connect. A family rhythm offers both consistency and relationship.
One more idea: Try a weekly family devotional
Our free eight-week devotional outlines eight examples of generosity in the Bible. Each one contains a scripture reading, discussion questions, and a few practical activities to consider. This devotional is a great opportunity to build a weekly habit with your family.
